It was shown throughout history that words have power over people and that words can move hearts and change minds. Historical figures and past leaders had great influence on people and they were able to do that by mere words. Nowadays these words that were once used by great individuals are immortalized in books.

“A Person that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.” These were the words of Dwight Eisenhower a former leader of the United States, in this quote he says that if people cared more for their material riches than their morals and values they would have lost not only what makes them human their material wealth would have been lost as well.

Desmond Tutu once said “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” He was a South African social rights activist fighting against the apartheid during the 1980. When all of the people acknowledge that other people are human and all are equal if that was possible I believe we can accomplish a true form of human-kind.

“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.” This is a quote from J.F Kennedy, also a former president of the United States. He believed that art can strengthen the roots of a culture, but only if the artist is free and able to fulfill his dream. This quote appealed to me because I think that art is a form of truth from the perspective of an artist.

These quotes were able to make people think and see things from a different angle. The individuals who said these quotes had a similar dream and that dream was freedom and the welfare of mankind.

Ethnocentrism

 

 

1. On the lines below, write a definition of Ethnocentrism. (in own words).

 

                                                     

Ethnocentrism is when an individual thinks that his culture, ideas, values, and background are superior to other’s culture. Also it is where the world is seen from the perspective of one’s own culture only. Ethnocentrism is also similar to prejudice, where the individual believes that others way of doing things is wrong. An example I have seen is when people of different nationalities think that their nation is better than any other.

 

 

 

2. Read the cartoon. How is Ethnocentrism reflected in the conversation below?

In the conversation above Ethnocentrism was depicted as intolerance, where one of the characters(Bucky) believes that he will tolerate them when “they stop being freaks and act like me” that showed that this character believes that he is better than the rest.

 

 

 

 

 3. Looking at the cartoon characters.

 

Imagine them in social situations. What kind of people would (would n’t) they associate with? What kind of events (movies, shows) would (would n’t) they prefer to go? Think of other situations.

Bucky would most likely socialize with individuals who have the same way of thinking and feelings towards other who are different from them. He would probably follow movies and shows that have stereotype and prejudice as a sense of humor and would most likely believe them.

 

 

Describe the man talking with Bucky. Let’s call him Tom

 

 

 

 

 

Tom is a more open minded person; in the comic strip he showed tolerance and an understanding attitude. He would probably befriend very different individuals who have different cultural background. The events Tom will most likely take part in diverse cultural events such as Carnival.

Stereotyping, Prejudice and Discrimination, these terms are used to depict ideas and information that are too general and could have false information. Due to the generalization of the information society would have the wrong or only part of the idea of the subject. The effects are very negative and have a strong impact on other people’s lives.

Stereotyping is the idea taken about certain individuals or way of doing things, but these ideas could be wrong or not accurate. However, most stereotypes are used as jokes and for other comical purposes, because it is used for jokes society take them as a true piece of information. Some of the stereotypes that I have seen are racial such as, saying Egyptians are smart and sexual such as; men do more or better jobs than women.

Prejudice is the judgment which is usually negative towards people or a person, because of social class, race, beliefs, etc… these judgments are being applied without base or actual experience and information. Some forms of prejudice are classism where people who are uneducated or poor are considered unimportant stupid individuals, racism where people think that their race is superior to other cultures.

Discrimination is the treatment on an individual based on his or her ethnic background, this treatment is based on stereotypes and prejudice which as we have learned are information that are general and may be wrong. Due to the lack of experience with other cultures people use any available information which could be wright or wrong. A form of discrimination that I have experienced is the treatment of foreigners in work place such as seeing a native English speaker we think they are smart and hard working.

I believe that Stereotyping, prejudice and Discrimination are the result of people focusing on what makes them different from other cultures. Another reason is that some people fear change and believe that their way of life is in danger. Everybody knows that change is inevitable that is why I ask will people accept this change and focus on how similar people are before it is too late?
